FEMA studies have shown that every $1 spent on mitigation saves over $4 in response and recovery.
After Hurricane Andrew, Florida building codes were changed to incorporate specific building practices requiring new construction to have certain features and improvements that mitigate potential damage from intense wind conditions. Subsequently, Florida also passed legislation requiring insurance companies to provide discounts and credits to customers whose homes have those features and improvements. In order to qualify for the available discounts, homes must undergo a certified wind inspection every five years, assuming no material changes have been made to the structure.
Wind mitigation will not only help save money on insurance costs, but will also protect your home from wind damage. Carrying wind storm insurance is a requirement for mortgage approval in the state of Florida. Homes vulnerable to wind damage may not be granted windstorm insurance.
